Moving to Switzerland

Why Switzerland?

Switzerland is a truly unique country at the heart of Europe. Its culture reflects the influence of its neighbors (Germany, France, and Italy) and this diversity is built into the country itself.

Switzerland offers an exceptional quality of life built on safety, stability, and a strong civic culture. Its unique blend of cultural influences, direct democracy, and emphasis on independence creates a highly organized and well-functioning society.

Switzerland provides access to a high-quality healthcare system with excellent standards of care. Services are modern, efficient, and widely available, contributing to overall well-being and long-term security.

Switzerland has one of the highest costs of living in Europe. However, strong salaries and a robust economy help offset expenses, allowing residents to maintain a high standard of living.

Switzerland offers a strong and well-regarded education system, supported by high standards and a focus on quality. Its stable environment and excellent public services make it an attractive option for families.

Switzerland is renowned for its breathtaking alpine landscapes, including mountains, valleys, and crystal-clear lakes. It offers world-class skiing, hiking, and outdoor recreation in one of the most scenic environments in the world.

The United States and Switzerland both allow dual citizenship.

Switzerland is in the Schengen Area

Membership in the Schengen area offers Swiss citizens significant benefits.

Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, a unique region where people, commerce, and capital move freely across borders without passport controls. This openness removes many of the barriers that exist elsewhere, making both everyday life and business significantly easier. It enables effortless travel, deeper integration, and a truly borderless European experience.
Switzerland is not in the European Union (EU). Countries within the EU offer an extraordinary level of freedom and mobility. Under the EU’s freedom of movement rules, citizens of one member state can live and work in any other EU country (plus Switzerland) without the need for a visa. While Switzerland is not an EU country, Swiss citizens enjoy freedom of movement throughout Europe because of treaties between Switzerland and the EU. In practical terms, this means that Swiss citizens can move seamlessly to Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, or any other EU member state without restriction.

How Can I Move to Switzerland?

You can move to Switzerland with a Long-Stay Visa

This is the most common pathway for Americans seeking to move to Switzerland. A visa is official authorization that allows you to live, work, and/or study in another country. Most visas are issued for a period of one year and can be renewed as long as you continue to meet the visa’s requirements. Without a visa, U.S. citizens can only visit Switzerland for tourism for up to 90 days, but cannot remain long-term, establish residency, or work.

How do Long-Stay Visas work?

You must apply for a visa and submit detailed documentation demonstrating that you meet the qualifications for the specific category you are seeking. This process can be time-consuming and complex, which is why many people choose to work with Geostrata so they can remain focused on their careers, families, and daily lives. Our network of trusted law firm partners will take care of your visa application, ensuring every detail is handled with precision, compliance, and care.

Most visas have a shared set of basic requirements. You must have enough income to cover your cost of living during your stay. The amount of income (and what kind of income) differs depending on your situation. You will also need to show proof of accommodation, which may be a leased apartment, a hosting arrangement with family or friends, or a home you own.

Switzerland’s immigration system is a reflection of its governmental system. Switzerland is divided into 26 cantons, which function like independent states. Each canton has its own unique immigration policies. For example, a wealthy person can pay a “lump-sum tax” in Geneva to secure residency, but not in Zurich where this immigration pathway is prohibited. This system makes moving to Switzerland more complicated than moving to other European countries. Additionally, Switzerland has strict requirements for its visas. The following people are most suited for Swiss visas:
  • Highly-skilled professionals
  • High-net-worth individuals
  • People who work for international institutions
  • Researchers or scientists
  • People who have specialized skills in emerging technologies
  • Students

Remember, if you obtain citizenship in France, Italy, Spain, or Portugal, you are free to move to Switzerland without any restrictions! Geostrata is here to help you discover a plan that can work for you.

Geostrata has deep expertise across the full range of visa pathways available to Americans. We carefully evaluate your background, objectives, and timeline to identify the option best suited to your circumstances.

Spotlight: Swiss Residency by Lump-Sum Taxation

Beautiful Swiss village

For High-Net-Worth Individuals

This immigration pathway is designed for high-net-worth individuals. Unlike golden visas (which allow residency through investment), this pathway allows you to negotiate a fixed annual tax payment based on your Swiss living expenses instead.

You do not need to disclose your global asset portfolio or income to Swiss authorities.

To be eligible, you must possess substantial wealth. You are not permitted to perform any work in Switzerland with this permit aside from managing your own wealth. You must live in Switzerland for 183 days per year and make Switzerland your primary residence.

This process is a negotiation, so hiring professional representation is necessary to obtain the most favorable terms. Some cantons do not allow residency by lump-sum taxation, so you must decide where you want to live before applying.

This pathway is impractical for most, but for people who have substantial wealth it is an excellent opportunity.
