The United Kingdom

Why the UK?

The United Kingdom offers a dynamic blend of global opportunity, historic depth, and modern infrastructure, making it a compelling destination for Americans ready to build a new life abroad.

The UK delivers a high standard of living with world-class cities, reliable public services, and strong cultural infrastructure. From London’s global energy to quieter regional hubs, there are diverse lifestyle options to match your priorities.

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) provides comprehensive healthcare access, largely free at the point of use for residents. This system significantly reduces out-of-pocket medical costs compared to the U.S.

Costs vary widely, with London at the high end and many regional cities offering more affordability. Housing is typically the largest expense, but transportation and healthcare costs are often lower than in the U.S.

The UK is home to globally respected universities and a strong public education system. Its academic institutions consistently rank among the best in the world, attracting international students and researchers.

From the Scottish Highlands to the cliffs of Cornwall, the UK offers diverse and accessible landscapes. National parks, coastal paths, and countryside escapes are never far from major cities.

The United States and the United Kingdom both allow dual citizenship.

How Can I Move to the UK?

You can move to the UK with a visa

This is the most common pathway for Americans seeking to move to the UK. A visa is official authorization that allows you to live, work, and/or study in another country. Most visas are issued for a period of one year and can be renewed as long as you continue to meet the visa’s requirements. Without a visa, U.S. citizens can only visit the UK for tourism for up to 6 months, but cannot remain long-term, establish residency, or work. The UK’s immigration system is more restrictive than most countries in Europe.

How do visas work?

You must apply for a visa and submit detailed documentation demonstrating that you meet the qualifications for the specific category you are seeking. This process can be time-consuming and complex, which is why many people choose to work with Geostrata so they can remain focused on their careers, families, and daily lives. Our network of trusted law firm partners will take care of your visa application, ensuring every detail is handled with precision, compliance, and care.

Most visas have a shared set of basic requirements. You must have enough income to cover your cost of living during your stay. The amount of income (and what kind of income) differs depending on your situation. You will also need to show proof of accommodation, which may be a leased apartment, a hosting arrangement with family or friends, or a home you own.

Geostrata has deep expertise across the full range of visa pathways available to Americans. We carefully evaluate your background, objectives, and timeline to identify the option best suited to your circumstances.
